Shocker: Only 1% of ODs use Amniotic Membranes

An ODwire.org member reports that based on the latest CMS data, Only 409 optometrists reported CPT code 65778 (placement of an amniotic membrane) in 2017.

That 409 docs represents approximately 1% of the total number of practicing ODs in the US.

That, in our opinion, is both disappointing and shocking.

And represents a major missed opportunity both for patient and doctor alike.

Read more about the statistics, and why so few docs are working with amniotic membrane technology.

Do you utilize amniotic membranes in your practice?
If not, why not?

Weigh in!

… and if you’re interested in the topic, also take a listen to an interview we did with Dr. Sheila Morrison of UH on the importance of amniotic membranes to practitioners today:

Uprise Essentials & Pro – Plus Free Special for ODwire.org Members

I spoke with Denise Crown from VisionWeb @ VEE to catch the latest with them (listen to the 5 minute interview above.)

Uprise has now split out their platform into two separate packages at different pricepoints — “Essentials” and “Pro“.

So for a new practitioner who doesn’t necessarily need the kitchen sink, but does want an EHR, Essentials is an inexpensive way to go. You can then seamlessly “upgrade” to Pro when ready.

*** They are extending the show special: You can get Uprise Essentials for FREE for your first doc if you sign up for VisionWeb’s Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) package (which does claim submissions, etc.)

Just contact them to take advantage of this or ask questions in this thread.

How ODwire.org Keeps Your Privacy Safe

ODwire Servers
ODwire.org founder (left), in 2004. Back when we did everything by hand.  Everything!

In the wake of the latest Facebook scandal (and the #deletefacebook movement), I’d like to provide some explanations of how we keep your data and privacy safe on ODwire.org.

Privacy has been a big deal to us since the site was founded 15+ years ago, it is part of our DNA, and it a major reason the site has been successful. (At the same time, it limits our growth, as “registering” isn’t just as simple as clicking a button! C’est la vie.)

Unfortunately the rest of the world is only now catching on to just how bad the situation is on many other sites.

Read more to see how we address these issues on ODwire.org, and why it is important.

Olympian Laurie Hernandez on Contact Lenses, Perseverance, and DWTS!

At SECO 2018, we sat down with gold medal Olympic gymnast, Dancing with the Stars winner, and NY Times best-selling author Laurie Hernandez to discuss contact lenses, perseverance, and her possible return to the sport!

Laurie was fit with CLs at an early age, and the improved vision they provided helped her training as she forged a path to the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

She’s subsequently become a spokesperson for Alcon, which is how we ended up getting this interview (yes, I was as shocked as you when this happened !)

Her positivity and poise are remarkable.  My biggest takeaway from our brief talk was the importance of remaining optimistic in the face of long odds and (very) painful injuries.

Thanks again to Laurie and to Alcon for making it happen!
