Dental chain focuses on underserved market, new dentists - MLive.com

We're getting an Aspen Dental in our city of 30,000 in north central Iowa. I think the local dentists are in for a big surprise - they're about to find out that loyalty has gone out the window.

I see that Avesis also offers a dental plan. Do any of you guys/gals live in a community where Avesis has an employer offering that plan?

I have extensive first-hand experience with Aspen's corporate HQ, they are an extremely well-run, efficient organization. They will no doubt make an impact in your community, particularly with less well-heeled patients.

They tend to hire dentists fresh out of school for the most part. One interesting/odd thing about them is that they allow the dentists to 'buy in' to the practice after a period of several years, and kick them up to 'management' level. It seems like an effective way to retain their doctors, but the firm hasn't been around that long, so we'll see how it goes in the long term.

I live in an area where even well-heeled patients think they're poor. If the facility is clean and comfortable, they're going to knock 2-3 dentists in this area out of practice. Pretty much what the chain opticals did to PP ODs.
