PHOENIX, April 22, 2025—A recent study published in the Latin American Journal of Ophthalmology is demonstratating the long-term effectiveness of perceptual learning therapy (PLT) for older children and adults with amblyopia.1 The research measures the visual improvement and sustained benefits of PLT over a five-year period, focusing on visual acuity, binocular function restoration, and the sustainability of therapeutic effects.

Long-term efficacy of perceptual learning therapy in amblyopia: A 5-year follow-up study (Magdalene D, et al) tracked patients treated with RevitalVision, an evidence-based software clinically proven to improve adult amblyopia by enhancing the brain’s visual processing. Participants showed consistent improvement in their visual performance, suggesting that digital perceptual learning interventions can significantly impact long-term visual outcomes.

Among the study’s most notable results is participants’ contrast sensitivity function improved by 100%, on average, with a mean improvement of 2.5 lines in best-corrected visual acuity on the LogMAR scale, translating to a visual acuity of 20/30. These visual gains were sustained over a five-year period, indicating the long-term stability of RevitalVision’s benefits.

“Traditional treatment methods for amblyopia, like patching or atropine penalization, are considered ineffective beyond childhood, underscoring the need for alternative therapeutic strategies,” said Charles Morris, general manager, North America, RevitalVision. “RevitalVision offers a clinically-proven therapy to produce long-term visual improvements, which could ultimately reshape how amblyopia is treated beyond the critical age moving forward.”

RevitalVision’s personalized, software-based approach to perceptual learning is the only FDA-cleared product for amblyopia beyond childhood ages nine and older. The prescribed, home-based vision training software gives eye care professionals a unique tool to improve vision in diverse conditions including amblyopia, keratoconus, nystagmus, and early presbyopia by focusing on personalized cortical visual stimulation.
