Agenda

OCT Retinal Bootcamp
Dan Epshtein, OD, FAAO

Dr. Epshtein dives into practical uses of OCT technology including the OCT concept, types of OCT scans, their interpretation and detection of normal vs. signs of pathology. Clinical cases will be presented to demonstrate the use and interpretation of OCT for diagnosing common diseases as well as masquerader pathology.

New Trends and Practices in the Diagnosis and Management of Glaucoma
Murray Fingeret, OD, FAAO; John Flanagan, PhD, Dsc (hon), FCOptom, FAAO, FARVO

Dr. Fingeret and Prof. Flanagan share their insights regarding best practices in glaucoma diagnosis and management based on recent innovations.

Benefits of using the new SITA™ Faster test strategy and 24-2C test pattern are presented and the methodology evolution from SITA Standard to SITA Fast to SITA Faster is discussed. The presentation includes clinical cases that highlight benefits of using SITA Faster 24-2C.

Ultra-widefield 2.0: HD True Color Imaging
Kevin L.Gee, OD, FAAO, Diplomate, ABO; Dan Epshtein, OD, FAAO

Dr. Gee and Dr. Epshtein provide valuable insight on how ODs are implementing the latest technology in ultra-widefield imaging into their practice, enhancing both patient care and patient education.

Cases will be presented highlighting the clinical value of true color, high-resolution imaging from the ZEISS CLARUS 500 and how it can aid in detecting and diagnosing the full spectrum of eye disease, from the periphery to the macula, optic nerve head and anterior segment.

Glaucoma Progression – Putting the Pieces All Together
Michael Chaglasian, OD, FAAO; Murray Fingeret, OD, FAAO

Dr. Fingeret and Dr. Chaglasian discuss the importance of detecting glaucoma progression and the rate of progression when managing glaucoma and making decisions about treating a patient, changing medication or referring a patient to a glaucoma specialist.

When managing a glaucoma patient, longitudinal sets of multi-dimensional, multi-modality data must be used in combination. Glaucoma Workplace is a platform that integrates OCT structure and Visual Field function, bringing together test of both types in Guided Progression Analysis (GPA™) to help determine if glaucoma is in a stable condition or progressing, and at what rate.

OCT Angiography: Routine to Extreme
Carolyn E. Majcher, OD, FAAO; Elizabeth A. Steele, OD, FAAO

Dr. Steele and Dr. Majcher review OCT Angiography (OCTA) technology, its implementation in OCT devices and practical considerations for using OCTA as a complementary modality that may aid in revealing or confirming early signs of disease and assist in the diagnosis and management of retina diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, AMD and vascular pathology. Novel applications for tracking changes in glaucoma based on capillary blood flow parameters are also discussed.

Getting Ahead of the Wave(front) – Digital Refraction in Practice
Benito Peña, OD

Valuable insights and case studies on the use of wavefront HOA objective refraction data in combination with ZEISS digital phoropter technology to speed workflow and help to improve patient outcomes.

Discussing principles, and usability, this course highlights how ZEISS i.Scription can aid in the resolution of difficult patient acuity challenges while adding practice revenue.

Adam,

Do you know if the program will also be "on demand"? I'm on business travel on those two days.

Yes, as of right now the plan is to put the show on demand for 30 days post-event. I'll keep everyone up-to-date in this thread if plans change.

Someone emailed me with a question about the content at the event; these are all-new lectures, none are retreads from prior years.

Obviously this has a more commercial bent (since Zeiss is running this with us), but whether you use their devices or someone else's the content on glaucoma, OCT interpretation, etc, is generally useful.

Zeiss announced that it has received FDA 510(K) clearance for the Clarus 700, high-definition, ultra-widefield imaging system. Clarus 700 is the first high-resolution ultra-widefield imaging with true color and a complete range of fundus imaging modalities, including fluorescein angiography, according to a company news release.

Ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography helps eye care specialists identify earlier more severe forms of diabetic retinopathy like neovascularization and retinal diseases such as uveitis, choroidal masses, retinal tears, detachments, and peripheral ischemia.

The high-resolution and high contrast images of the fluorescein angiography from the Clarus 700 allows clinicians to capture the smallest details from the macula in early phase to the periphery in late phase of fluorescein angiography. Powered by Zeiss’ “Broadline Fundus Imaging” the Zeiss Clarus 700 captures images that closely resemble the natural coloration of the fundus as it appears under direct clinical observation, according to Zeiss.

“I think the main goal of any fundus imaging system is to really get the pan-retinal view of the retina in true color. That’s where I think Clarus is going to make some major steps in that direction,” Jesse Jung, MD, from East Bay Retina Consultants, said in a company news release.

Using a simple and intuitive interface with time-saving data acquisition features, the Clarus 700 provides a comprehensive fundus exam that aids in diagnoses, treatment planning, and disease management. With its new features using deep learning algorithms, retina specialists can maximize the workflow efficiency in their practice and image all patient types including elderly and sick who may have trouble maintaining their fixation.

“Zeiss has been at the forefront of industry-defining advancements that have made Clarus the industry’s standard of care for identifying retinal and glaucoma disease,” Jim Mazzo, Global President of Ophthalmic Devices at Carl Zeiss Meditec, said in the news release. “From early detection to post-operative evaluation, we’re here to support our customers, every step of the way.”

With the Clarus 700, advanced care specialists can manage all needed capture modalities including: True color with RGB separation, autofluorescence-green, autofluorescence-blue, stereo image pairs, external eye and fluorescein angiography in one session from one device, all without having to reposition the patient, thus providing patients a comfortable exam experience.

Will these lectures have COPE approval?

Will these lectures have COPE approval?
Unfortunately not. The speakers are offering great material but will also be discussing Zeiss products. Zeiss is paying the bill for the show .

As a result there is no charge for the education. The exhibit hall will be offering show discounts as if you attended in a Bricks and Mortar meeting.

Nothing to lose and education to gain.

Adam and I will be doing a live chat during the show on 7/20 and 7/21 from 11am ET- 2 PM ET (8am PT- 11am PT).

We shall have some of speakers giving the presentations sharing insights on their presentation and possibly other topics.

Do you want to share some thoughts with Adam or myself? Send me a Private Message with your phone number and we'll schedule a time. No worries about COPE approval. Your decision on what you would like to discuss.

To clarify --

COPE doesn't allow a single company to sponsor an entire COPE-approved CE event -- the conflict of interest is too great.

Sometimes you'll see individual companies sponsoring a dinner or something similar through the use of a grant given to a third party who produces the event, but there are restrictions on what the company can and can't do (ie -- in those cases, the company can't dictate who the speaker is, or what they talk about, or even where the event is held. Corporate staff has to leave the area where the education is taking place -- they can't even be in the same room as the rest of the docs, etc...) It is a challenge to produce such an event (we've done it before, but ugh...)

Anyway, for online programs you will rarely (if ever) see a single company sponsored COPE approved materials, and if you do, it is likely they are in violation.

Just a reminder that the ZEISS Ophthalmic Digital Summit is coming up tomorrow -- see more details here.

The Livestream will also be broadcast here on ODwire.org, Paul and I will be interviewing folks as usual and describing the blow-by-blow of what's happening at the conference.

Hope to see you there!
