Optometrists, ophthalmologists compromise on practice bill - Capitol Weekly

Scott,

As I hear it, the talks have been extremely contentious. But one thing that might happen is something called legislative intent. AB929 8 years ago was settled before it got bloodier because the legislature was going to force either side to accept what the legislature had in mind if the two sides didn't get together. Thus the bill in the present form.

The new bill will likely create a similar circumstance where neither side will like the resulting bill. It would be the legislature who will put the hammer down again.

Dr. Hom,

For some reason, the link is down. Could you please clarify where this leaves CA ODs?

The way I read it, it's where they were 8 years ago.

I really like it that the article is sure to mention that ODs are not medical doctors. Also the implication that we've had half of the training. It doesn't mention the fact that we have roughly the same amount of time training specifically in eye care.

Agreed. In reality, my 5 years vs. their 3!

This Friday will be momentous. The Senate gets to vote on this now. Because the language of the bill is a place holder to permit the completion of the negotiations, it can be voted upon immediately. The current session ends in Aug 2008 and we will have to start this BS all over again.

No new language has been give to the OD public yet.
